Proposal: Drawing 101 – Foundations of Sight & Structure

from $180.00

Unlock Your Creative Vision: Drawing 101 at 700 Bryden in this 7 Week recurring course

June 10th - July 22nd Wednesdays 6:30-8:30

Stop saying "I can’t even draw a stick figure." Drawing is not a mysterious gift; it is a mechanical skill that can be learned through disciplined practice and a shift in perception. Join professional artist David Higuera in the heart of Olde Towne East for a 7-8 week deep dive into the fundamentals of art.

Using the structured, spatial exercises of Drawabox and the perceptual techniques of Betty Edwards’ Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, you will learn to see the world like an artist and translate it onto paper with confidence. Whether you are a total beginner or looking to sharpen your technical foundations, this course offers a professional, low-pressure environment to grow your skills.

Week 1: (6/10) The Shift in Vision – Introduction to "seeing" edges and contour. Exercises include blind contour drawing and upside-down drawing to bypass the left brain’s symbolic processing.

Week 2: (6/17) Mark Making & Ghosting – Implementing Drawabox techniques. Focusing on confident linework, the "Ghosting" method, and mastering ellipses to create smooth, intentional marks.

Week 3: (6/24)The Perception of Negative Space – Learning to draw the "space around the object" to ensure accurate proportions. Introduction to the "Vase-Face" exercise and complex silhouettes.

Week 4: (7/1 )Form & Spatial Reasoning – Constructing 3D forms in space. Using "Planes" and boxes to understand how objects occupy volume.

Week 5: (7/8) Light & Shadow (Value) – Transitioning from line to form through shading. Understanding core shadows, highlights, and cast shadows using the 5-step value scale.

Week 6: (7/15) The Still Life Project (Part 1) – Compositional setup and the "Block-In." Students will apply previous weeks’ lessons to a multi-object still life, focusing on accurate placement and proportions.

Week 7: (7/22) The Still Life Project (Part 2) – Final rendering and texture. Completing the project with a focus on value contrast and finishing details.

Materials List - select “included” or “not included” in check-out

Students are requested to bring the following materials to each session. A limited "Shared Supply" kit (charcoal and fixative) will be provided for specific exercises.
